A Rant, A Surprise, & I Wonder...

Today has been I have to say quite a relaxing Sunday. I have only exited the flat one time, and that was to go for an aperitivo in Navigli with a friend of mine. We went to a bar called 'Cape Town'. It was packed with people which was a surprise for a Sunday night however it's Fashion Week in Milano at the moment so the city is busy in general, but good busy! I mean one of the best weeks of the year in Milan is Salone Internazionale del Mobile (the Furniture Fair) which takes place during one week every April and the city comes alive. There are so many events, especially around Zona Tortona which is where they hold Fuori Salone, and in general the Milan locals can't help but be excited by the atmosphere generated in the city from thousands of international visitors. Fashion Week is similar in a way because of the large number of people visiting the city, however much harder to get a ticket for! But now back to the bar 'Cape Town', which is a good bar, relaxed, and down to earth, and therefore quite un-Milanese! For further details: http://milan.unlike.net/locations/307316-Cape-Town-Caf

My rant for the day is about my flatmate, who seems to have no concept about helping out in the flat...I mean don't get me wrong, he is a good guy, however I have to ask him to clean (as he just never does!) rather than me just doing it all, and tonight for example I put the dishwasher on then went out, came home and he in the meantime has opened the dishwasher after it had finished, and just left it, also his plate that he ate dinner off he left in the sink like Cinderella was just going to magically arrive to sort everything out. It drives me crazy! But it's probably the biggest thing that frustrates me so I guess there could be a lot worse things I could complain about in a flatmate. So I unpacked the dishwasher, and made sure to make lots of noise as I did the job. That was my little way of expressing my annoyance.

I'm hoping to see L in the next couple of days. I haven't seen him since last weekend, and I'm keen to meet up with him again. I'm definitely interested in him, and would like to get to know him more. We have been texting and instant messaging through Facebook during the past week while I was in London, so fingers crossed. We have both been busy this weekend, and not been able to catch up so that's why I'd like to see him soon. There is a tiny part of me though that is wondering if he is keen or not, but I guess that is just natural when we have only just met. I was almost tempted by the Portu today, he text me as he arrived back from a work trip in Asia. He wanted to see me this afternoon (although with him I believe about 5% of what he tells me, because he has burnt me too many times), and a part of me just thought, ok, I'm going, and then I was feeling ridiculous at the same time because of L (who I've only met three times and the last time I saw him he told me that he is actually also seeing someone else but that if something serious happens with us that he would be just with me - to which I replied that if he wants a relationship with me, then it has to be just with me). So I told the Portu about L, and he told me that I should definitely not go to see him this afternoon, and instead just focus on L. To say I was surprised is putting it mildly. I was shaking my head, and then I was relieved. I guess I'm confused and frustrated. I am actually someone who doesn't do the multiple men thing. I don't run around the city having dates with lots of guys, and I don't want to. Nor do I want to be treated like that, so I don't act like that with others. I would just like to be with one man, in a committed happy relationship, however this is not the easiest thing to find. The search continues....

Thought for the Day?

I really liked the below phrase as seen on the outside of actually a really nice restaurant that I ate lunch at in Lisbon. Unfortunately I didn't take down the name of the restaurant (yes, a very smart move on my behalf!!), but it's located kind of behind the Cathedral, Sé de Lisboa. I really like the idea of someone watching over me, and making sure I'm ok, I think sometimes we all need a helping hand...

These were the other walls of the restaurant, nice hey?!?!

London Tapas Cuisine...

Last night I went out for a catch up and dinner with a friend of mine and we headed to a tapas bar that in fact I've been to before, and I really wanted to try again. The restaurant is called "Barrica Tapas Bar", and its found at 62 Goodge Street, London W1T 4NE. Their website is www.barrica.co.uk.

It's not a massive restaurant, and its therefore recommended to book ahead. The food is all Spanish tapas and they have daily specials to try as well. The food is really tasty, they have some excellent Spanish hams, seafood, and standard tapas style dishes. The service is friendly, and good plus the prices are quite reasonable as well. Both times that I've been there I've really enjoyed the red wines that I drank, and they do have an extensive wine menu to choose from. So all in all its a good location for tapas in a relaxed atmosphere. The location is just north of Oxford street, and the closest tube station is Goodge Street.

Today in Christchurch New Zealand there was a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit the city during lunchtime. Just seeing all the photos today its so very sad, and the online newspapers are saying that the death toll could hit 200. The city seems to have crumbled with many large buildings destroyed, and a city in shock. Rescuers are still trying to reach those trapped underneath buildings following the quake. It seems that Australia and New Zealand are having an unforgettable summer, and not really for the right reasons. Fingers crossed for all in NZ right now.

London Town!

Yesterday afternoon I flew across to London. I decided that all I felt like doing was going to see a film, and having a nice relaxing evening. As I'm staying on the Strand, the easiest place to head to for a film is Leicester Square. I ended up seeing "Love and Other Drugs". It fitted my mood perfectly, it is a rom-com but does have an interesting message with regards to pharmaceutical companies in the USA during the mid 90's, what they were trying to achieve, versus Doctors and their patients.

Then I went to grab some dinner at a restaurant called "Byron Hamburgers" which I've walked past quite a few times and been curious to try for a while. It's located at 33-35 Wellington st, London WC2E 7BN, and website is www.byronhamburgers.com. The restaurant is fitted out really nicely, and has a very relaxed feeling to it. I think most of the staff working there are Aussies. In fact one of the reasons I was so curious to try this place was because I thought that it must be owned by Australians with such a name, and naturally thought of Byron Bay when I saw the name. The burger that I had was not the best I've ever eaten, the meat though was nicely cooked. I was really hoping that perhaps it would be possible to add some beetroot as well, but that wasn't one of the options, then it would have been really an Aussie burger!! For a quick, relaxed burger this is a nice place to go to. They do also serve other foods such as salads on the menu too.

Ciao!

Ready for the Weekend

This week has actually gone by fairly quickly, and even so I'm still so very ready for the weekend!!

Tonight I'm off to an aperitivo being held by the social network Inter Nations, and this particular evening (and actually last night plus tomorrow night) are being held by a new group called FUORIBIT who are somehow part of the City of Milan organisation. Although I'm not really sure how! At this evening's event there will be the General Consul of Argentina attending, so naturally the theme is Argentinian. The bar/restaurant we are going to is called "Finisterra", its in Brera (in Milano) and its a nice location, quite large, and has a good selection of aperitivo food.

Tomorrow night I'm then going to another aperitivo which is being held by some friends of mine at their home, and its a Fundraising event to raise money for some friends of theirs who are currently volunteering in Sri Lanka. It's going to be a great night too. The people who are in Sri Lanka have been helping with re-building houses still not re-constructed after the Tsunami. Hopefully we can raise a good amount of money!

I saw L last night, and we had a very nice time together. I'm looking forward also to seeing him again this weekend!! Strangely enough whilst I was with L, the ex Portu decided to text me...how does that happen?? It was very spooky I have to say. But not tempting...

Next week I'm in London for work, and am leaving this Sunday. I'll be there for a few days, and besides working and meeting lots of clients, I'm gonna make sure to catch up with my cousin and friends for dinners too!

Happy Weekend! I hope that you have a great one!

5) The castle and a gorgeous rainbow we saw taken from the "Elevador Santa Justa".
6) View of the Baixa, Alfama and Castle from Bairro Alto.

Lisbona Weekend!

Last weekend I went to Lisbon in Portugal for a quick weekend getaway. Just two nights, and I have to say Lisbon is a great weekend destination. However, in my opinion it would be better to have 3/4 days because then you would also be able to visit Sintra which is about 30 km's away from Lisbon centre. Sintra holds UNESCO World Heritage status and is a beautiful town oft described as a "Garden of Eden", overlooking the ocean. So we didn't manage to get to Sintra, however we did see many of the top tourist attractions in Lisbon.

We stayed in a pensione in Bairro Alto called "Pensão Londres". The rate per night was €50 per room including breakfast. The room was fairly large, and staff all very friendly. It is probably a 2.5 - 3 star property with comfortable beds, typical European style continental breakfast, and bathroom included in each room. The location is great, at the top end of Bairro Alto, with a small park (only a three minute walk away) giving a view of the whole city looking towards the Castle. Bairro Alto is a centrally located suburb of Lisbon where you can find many bars, restaurants and also good shopping, and has been traditionally regarded as a Bohemian part of the city.

On Friday night we went to a restaurant in Bairro Alto called, "Cervejaria Trinidade" (http://www.cervejariatrindade.pt). This restaurant is huge and housed in what was originally a Monastery and then became a Brewery in approximately 1834. The food was typical Portuguese fare and we tried Bacalhau which is made from dried cod, and in Portugal is made in hundreds of different ways. The prices were good too! The next morning, we meandered down through Bairro Alto and Chiado slowly going downhill, sipping a coffee at "Café a Brasileira" (open since 1905, and serves a v.nice coffee!), before catching the tram 28 up the hill into Alfama to firstly visit the Castle, "Castelo de Sao Jorge". The castle sits overlooking the city and has a great view of the river below spreading out to a massive view of the whole area. The castle dates back to the 6th Century, was fortified originally by the Romans and is spread over quite a fair sized area of land. We walked around taking lots of photos and looking on to the very beautiful gardens in the houses literally just below which were I have to say really pretty!! Seeing the Castle first up was I have to say a great way to get an early perspective of the city. Next was a visit to the "Sè de Lisboa Catedral" which is also in the Alfama area, and about a 10 minute walk down the hill (still on the same street where the 28 tram goes) from the Castle. The Cathedral dates back to 1147, and is a Roman Catholic denomination Church. It's definitely worth a visit, also to the Cloisters.

We caught a taxi in the afternoon to Belem which is about 15 minutes from the centre. Taxi's are super cheap in Lisbon, and definitely easy to find throughout the city. We ended up catching up quite a few taxis, and with four of us it ended up being probably the most economic way of getting to a few of the different attractions. We headed straight for the "Mosteiro dos Jeronimos" which is just amazing. Anyone visiting Lisbon must go to see this incredible building. The Church is incredible, such height inside, and it also includes the tomb of Vasco da Gama. Construction on the building started in 1502. Originally constructed to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage and actually the site is the place where he and his crew spent their last night before heading for India. The cloisters directly behind the Church itself are stunning and took my breath away! The architecture of the cloisters is classified as Manueline, and the columns are in fact each differently carved with designs depicting sea exploration. It really is a site where you just want to sit and look around at every part of the building. It's possible to visit both the ground floor which also has access to the Refectory and then upstairs too. Just beautiful! Also in Belem, kind of across the road from the Monastery and where we headed next is the "Discoveries Monument", which sits almost over the river itself, and represents a ship and its men ready to depart. It is beautiful to look at especially with the sun shining, and lots of people relaxing and enjoying a lazy Saturday afternoon. Not far again and about a 15 minute walk down the river is the "Torre Belem". We actually arrived later in the afternoon, and the tower had already closed but I have to say we enjoyed a beautiful sunset instead, and took lots of pictures of the sun slowly fading. Our last port of call in Belem, was a very sweet one..."Antiga Confeitaria de Belem", where we sampled their famous pasteis de belem (or Portuguese tarts) which were delicious and still warm! Each cost only €0.90. This pasticceria is a must!!!

On Saturday night, we had booked the restaurant "Casa do Alentejo" (http://www.casadoalentejo.pt/flash.html), which is located in Baixa and this area is essentially considered to be the downtown area of Lisbon. The restaurant is housed in a building/palace dating from the 17th Century. When you first arrive into the reception area, the architecture is Moroccan in style, and is a definite reminder of arriving into a Moroccan Riad. The restaurant is upstairs, and although the building has had many reincarnations including being a Casino, it has been a restaurant since 1981. The restaurant has one room which is decorated in beautiful tiles (dating from the beginning of the 20th Century), which is an architectural style evident throughout the city, not just of inside homes, but also adorning the outside of houses and buildings, and I have to say a really nice feature to see. The food served, and is also very well priced, is from the Alentejo region of Portugal. The servings also were large, and we each sampled a different dish, both of seafood and meat, and all were delicious. We even finished off the meal with a glass of Port! A very nice evening and indeed day in Lisbon. It was a gorgeous warm winters day at about 18 degrees, and very sunny.

Sunday morning however was a completely different story, although still a decent temperature of approximately 14 degrees, it was pouring with rain. Therefore we needed to decide on what to do, but something that meant we wouldn't be soaked. So we decided to visit the Palace which has also referred to ask the "Little Versailles", called "Palácio Nacional de Queluz" which is in on the outskirts of Lisbon, half way between the city centre and Sintra. We caught a taxi to the Palace, and it took about 15 minutes and I think cost about €13-15. Because it was raining we unfortunately missed visiting the gardens of the Palace, which looked beautiful and a major feature of the Palace. The Palace building itself though is really beautiful, and it is possible to visit a large number of the rooms on the ground floor, and actually whilst we were wandering through there was a school group of young children also touring around and they were being entertained throughout. It was nice to see the kids so engaged and interested! We were not sure why but on the Sunday that we visited all tickets were free.

As the weather still wasn't great when we left the Palace we then headed to "Calouste Gulbenkian Museum". The museum is just a little north of the main city centre. To say that this museum is outstanding, is an understatement. It is just incredible. I don't think I was quite prepared for how lovely the museum is, and once again on this particular Sunday that we visited all tickets to enter were free! You start by entering the museum and viewing pieces from BC, including Egyptian, Persian, and Asian pieces. I found this quote on the Go Lisbon site (http://www.golisbon.com/sight-seeing/gulbenkian.html) about the museum:
"This is one of the world's finest private art collections, amassed over a period of 40 years by oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian, who was one of the 20th century's wealthiest men. In his later years he adopted Portugal as his home, and donated all of his stupendous art treasures to the country when he died in 1955 at the age of 86."
As you make your way through the various rooms it's possible to view ceramics, masks, rugs, bowls, paintings, furniture, and jewellery from BC to the 20th Century. To go from viewing ancient Egyptian pieces to Monet paintings and Rodin sculptures is amazing, and really a treat to be able to do. I could go on about this museum, as it is so beautiful, but I won't, other than to say "You must go"!!

The last thing that we did in Lisbon was to have some lunch, chicken with piri piri!! Then we made our way back to our Pensione via the "Elevador de Santa Justa", which is a turn of the century (20th Century that is!), elevator and has great views over the city looking towards the Castle and river.

Ahhh...a great weekend and definitely a city I recommend to visit!

Positive Vibes...

This week has flown by, and I'm looking forward to flying to Lisbon this afternoon for the weekend. I've never been to Portugal, and it's one country I've been wishing to visit for quite some time. Even if for a weekend, I'm sure it's going to be super interesting to see a completely new country and it's culture. Portugal is one country that since school I've always thought of as being one of great explorers, with a long history and of course it will be lovely to be in Lisbon; a city by the sea. In the past couple of years I've had some experience with one particular Portuguese man who lives in Milan, and at the end one I could only say is a crazy game player, however even with this experience I wouldn't say that I am not still slightly fascinated just a little bit by men from the Med!! So I am pretty excited to be going away, even if just for a short time! I'll post some pics next week!

Also at work this week, we moved into a new office here in Milan, and I have to say that throughout the week all my colleagues and I have been positive, happy and enjoying our much bigger and new space. We are in a different area of Milan as well, close to Porta Genova, Zona Tortona and Via Savona, and therefore every lunch time has seen us making the big decision on which restaurant to try as we are really spoilt for choice in this part of town. So far we've tried Asian (they offered both a Chinese & Sushi lunch menu!), a couple of Italian, and another which was supposed to be Mexican however it had just one Mexican themed plate on the menu, so we left that one a little disappointed.

I've continued with my internet dating as well this week, and I've been emailing a couple of guys still. I had a really nice aperitivo with one guy on Monday night, and have heard from him since, so we will be seeing each other again. He loves to travel and that is always a huge bonus for me, as I'm exactly the same. In fact we've already been swapping a few travel tales and mis-adventures....stay tuned!!

Have a great weekend!

Milano Girls Weekend...

Howdy!
This past weekend in Milan we had gorgeous warm sunny days, at around 15 degrees per day, and completely unexpected for February. I remember last year in February it was still really cold, and felt like we were still in the midst of winter, whereas this year, people are already mentioning spring with a happy glint in the eye, and the general mood around the city is changing.
During this weekend I had visitors from the UK, actually for a Hens Weekend, and so I was super pleased that the weather decided to co-operate. It's always a tiny bit stressful when people come to visit here in Milan because it's not my home city, yet, after being here for nearly five years I have lots of favourite places and so I always really hope that my visitors agree.
On Friday night, we had a great dinner at the Osteria Del Gnocco Fritto, (Via Pasquale Paoli 2, Milano) which is just off Naviglio Grande. The gnocchi fritti and pasta dishes were just delicious. Also excellent was the service, atmosphere and the bill too! I had suggested a visit to the beautiful Corso Como 10 so on Saturday after a morning of wandering around Parco Sempione, the Castle and the Arena I joined the rest of the group and we walked up to Corso Como to visit this luxurious one of a kind concept store, bar, restaurant and gallery. The photo exhibition that is being held there at the moment is one which includes photos of the Palace of Versailles, and is really nicely done. Every year I always look forward to the World Press Photo exhibition that shows in Milan at the Galleria Carla Sozzani; or basically upstairs from the main store / restaurant at Corso Como 10, and usually starts from about every April for approximately one month. Because it was such a glorious day, we decided to continue wandering and made our way back towards the centre along Corso Garibaldi, enjoying some shopping along the way. I mean when you have seven women on a Saturday afternoon in Milan....it has to be an afternoon of shopping!!
For Saturday night, it was time for some dancing, so off we went to Il Gattopardo Cafe, (Via Piero della Francesca, 47) and as per usual the evening started off slowly and by midnight the ex Church was packed with people dancing the night away! We did stumble out later in the evening and yesterday there was the odd hangover being felt!! It should always be remembered that Italian cocktails are much stronger than those found in  a lot of other countries, and almost everyone I know has had a hangover to prove this!
However it was a great night, and one to be remembered, as was the weekend. Yesterday, we could only but say: "What happens in Milan, stays in Milan"!!

Here are some photos taken over the weekend, of Castello Sforzesco, Parco Sempione, Corso Como 10 & Piazza Duomo...

In a Committed Relationship...BUT...

When a guy sends you roses and chocolates and says it was just a sign of affection, or friendship, one has to wonder...but wonder in this instance mostly because this particular guy is in a committed relationship and at the time was visiting his girlfriend for Christmas. I felt very uncomfortable about the whole situation, told him this, and have since tried in a way to avoid meeting him. Now, I could be wrong in trying to avoid him, however his behaviour left me thinking that perhaps this wasn't the first time he'd done this type of thing nor the last. I had met him at a dinner organised by a good friend of mine, and enjoyed talking to him that evening, and thought he seemed like an interesting man. Once I knew he had a girlfriend, I immediately saw him as just a friend. We connected on Skype and Facebook and he was messaging me every day from the USA where he was staying with his girlfriend. That in itself rang some little alarm bells for me, because if a guy is messaging me on a daily basis, although in most part quite harmless, what about his girlfriend? I'm leaving this one well alone though!

The thing is that I am one of those people who ends up trying to think about everyone involved in this type of situation, and therefore was feeling really sympathetic towards the girlfriend, who I'd never met nor likely never will. I hope that if this type of situation ever happens to me that someone is hoping me well too. Perhaps its me just sending out some good Karma to the world, and hoping that it comes back to me as well one day!

Good Positive Karma to us All I say!!!

New Bar / Restaurant: .JPEG, Milano

Today a friend and I decided to try out a new Restaurant close to our office, called .JPEG. It's actually both a Bar/Restaurant and Photo Gallery. The food and service were great. They had a lunch offer of €7 which included a lovely Salad, Glass of Wine (or Water) and Fruit.

Currently they have a photo exhibition by a Swedish photographer, and the photo's were all taken in Japan. The pics are nicely taken, with different interpretations of Japanese people and culture. At lunch time the restaurant wasn't too busy, and the whole fit out is quite modern, including cool bespoke chairs in a large open space.

The address is:

Watching from Afar

As an Australian living in Milan, today was strangely surreal. Watching moment by moment from my desk as Cyclone Yasi edged closer to the Queensland coast, surrounded by winter temperatures and a clear sunny day I couldn't imagine how completely devastating and scary the scene was in towns such as Mission Beach, Innisfail and Townsville. Yet here I was glued to the ABC News website hearing people being interviewed live and watching their home videos instantly uploaded onto You Tube. Once again, I was left with goosebumps as the Aussie spirit came through loud and clear, everyone talked about how tough people are in the region and that no matter how bad the damage is to their homes, crops and livelihoods that they'd be fine, like they were last time or the time before that. This is something that Australians are known around the world for, that incredible spirit or "she'll be right" nature.

My poor sunburnt country is having such a rough summer; whilst Queenslanders were battening down for Cyclone Yasi, bushfires were burning in Victoria and Sydney is sweltering!

From the Poem "My Country" by Dorothea Mackellar:

"I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!"

To Stalk or Not to Stalk?

Something which has come up a lot recently in conversations with friends, is "internet stalking". So my question is this "to stalk or not to stalk"?

In this ever-changing world of the global internet and social networking, we find ourselves tempted on a daily basis to check out new friends, new lovers, or work colleagues in an endeavour to find out all about them, or even some gossip...and when you think about it even just 15 years ago we had no such possibility. We were not able to take an in depth look at someone's profile and life rather we talked with friends (or whoever we could!) to find out more...or shock horror actually talked to the person.

I wonder whether having the possibility to view all this information actually helps or harms? I mean sure it's possible to take a cyber view of a person, but this to me is still just an overview of what that person is really all about.

Recently I joined the world of internet dating, (yes finally it happened after many conversations with friends about why yes you should do this!!), and every time I receive an email from a guy I immediately check out their photos and profile...who doesn't?!!? On the whole I've been messaging with seemingly good guys and have met a couple already. One in particular I saw the other day for a coffee, and he was more than happy for me to connect with him on Facebook too. I on the other hand was a little reluctant, and I am not usually one to be like this. I think deep inside I am still a little wary of the whole internet dating world, and perhaps messaging and one coffee doesn't quite make me ready to hand over my Facebook profile too, even if I immediately checked his profile (or as much as I could via privacy settings!!). So lets wait to see on that one...unfortunately I do still hear stories about internet dating saga's, and perhaps a little restraint isn't such a bad thing?

The other side is a friend who insists, well if he's a lover then he ain't my friend so why become Facebook friends? Or the fact that we delete or limit someone as soon as they hurt or betray us. In the end social networks such as My Space, LinkedIn, Inter Nations and Facebook can be as public or private as we want them to be so it is a very individual decision about how much personal information to let out to the greater cyber world...and also a very individual decision about how much to believe about that person you are thinking about stalking right now!!

Ciao!

Egyptian Protestors using new Technology to Communicate

Hi,

This is a story which caught my attention today, and one where I really think that technology is playing a positive role for the Egyptian people to communicate their feelings and opinions to the outside world during this incredibly historical time for them.

The idea is that because all internet providers are no longer able to function during the massive protests currently taking place a new technology was created last weekend by Google and Twitter where users can call an international telephone number, leave their message, and it is then translated onto Twitter with the hashtag #egypt.

Read about it here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12332850

Great story, and lets hope that this week we will see a resolution in Egypt.

1st Post!

Hello!

This is the first post, and there will be definitely more to come! I want this blog to be about my experiences, travels, cities where I live, food, fashion, news and funny anecdotes I want to share.

Creating a blog has been something I have been thinking about for a while, so I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes. Hopefully it will be a nice way to communicate and share my view on things.

So the first thing I am sharing with you is a photo I took in December in Marrakesh. I took the photo using the iPhone Hipstamatic application and I have to say I think it is one of the best app's available on the iPhone. It is great to see a different perspective from a photo and very easy to use. This photo was taken from the Menara Gardens, and was one very spectacular sunset.

Enjoy!
